In this edition of our song of the week feature The Mixed-Tape the spotlight turns to Carriages’s new single ‘Roots’.
Containing Carriages serene yet constantly moving sound Harry Bookless & Aaron Page’s latest release ‘Roots’ (one-half of their double-A side single with ‘Significant Landscapes’) is a beautifully arranged blend of syncopated rhythm, sharp synth notes and soaring vocals.
Calmly opening with glistening synthesizer and found-sound elements, ‘Roots’ gradually starts to take shape as the ever-evolving pops and clicks that form the periphery of the song’s vast soundscape begin to widen the scope of the recording’s vibrant sonic spectrum.
Above this palpable ebb and flow of textural beats sits a captivating vocal performance. Imbued with Page’s distinctive timbre, the musician delivers a softly conveyed melody that anchors the surrounding landscape of movement and nicely merges itself with the more urgent sound of the song’s backdrop.
Individualistic and engrossing all in one moment and constantly perfecting itself with each note, ‘Roots’ is the perfect glimpse into Carriages unique style and sound and indeed the high-water mark in a short career already filled with flourishes of brilliance.
It is for these reasons that ‘Roots’ by Carriages is this week’s addition to The Mixed-Tape. The single itself is out now. To read the previous additions to the feature click here.
