Kneecap’s second album Fenian arrives as one of the most politically charged Irish releases in recent years, confronting the history and meaning of a word long tied to identity, conflict and power.

In this episode of The Last Mixed Tape, we explores how “Fenian” evolved from Irish mythology and revolutionary history into a sectarian slur during the Troubles and why its use today remains deeply contested.

Rather than a conventional review of Kneecap’s Fenian album, the episode examines how Kneecap use language as both subject and weapon, blending Irish and English to challenge inherited narratives around culture, belonging and authority.

The result is a wider cultural analysis of how identity is shaped through language and whether words marked by conflict can ever be fully reclaimed.

The Last Mixed Tape is hosted by Stephen White, and is also available on Spotify and Apple Podcasts.
