The Mixed-Tape | Hilary Woods – Secret Sabbath

Night EP

In this edition of T.L.M.T’s song of the week feature The Mixed-Tape we turn our attention to Hilary Woods and her new track ‘Secret Sabbath’.

Opening with an echoing, reverberant click of percussion that recedes intently into the recordings ambient backdrop ‘Secret Sabbath’ makes it’s affecting introduction.

Surrounding and weaving itself around Hilary Woods’ captivating vocal performance, the music supports and gives a stunning depth of field for the artist to draw from.

With so much space to expand sonically, the sudden and impactful introduction of an ominous, yet enchanting, piano part exemplifies the intricately created landscape in which Woods’ songwriting resides.

Twisting the slow-burning percussion of the opening section, this glistening melody gives a sense of urgency to the song undercut by the engrossing feel of the melody itself. Indeed this juxtaposition of brooding beauty and rhythm is something that seems deeply engrained within the music.

Persistent in its rhythm, mood and tone ‘Secret Sabbath’ is a centre-piece in a record heavily populated by atmospheric allure. Deftly performed and produced, the song explores the vast, and intimately personal, soundscape that permeates throughout Night.

It is for these reasons that ‘Secret Sabbath’ by Hilary Woods is this week’s addition to The Mixed-Tape. The song’s parent record Night is out now. You can also read T.L.M.T’s full review of the E.P. here.
